There have been many brilliant directors throughout history: Kubrick, Welles, Hitchcock—the list goes on. A lot of those guys (and I mean guys) are retired or dead by now, though, and a lot of new directors are achieving close to the same level of artistry that these directors attained over the 20th century. Many of them grew up watching these classics and have taken cues from these legendary directors and others, who paved the way for cinema today.

Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to become a director. Thanks to the advent of iPhone cameras, as well as video cameras becoming more affordable in general, almost anyone with a phone and a YouTube account can make a decent movie that will get at least some eyes watching it. This has only given more chance for young directors to prove themselves with their directorial debuts, which that often lead to big budget blockbusters, as seen with recent blockbuster movies directed by fresh directors, including Jurassic World and Spider-Man: Homecoming. It’s also allowed some great directors to start directing at younger ages.

Now, in 2018, we have a truly astonishing number of directors working in the industry, who are creating new and cutting edge cinema almost every day. Both independent and mainstream cinema have never been more diverse than they are now, allowing for many different experiences to be turned into films. Streaming giants Amazon and Netflix have also allowed smaller films to be distributed directly into the homes of people who may not live near art theaters. Whether or not this is an attack on movie theaters is up to debate, but it's unquestionably good that films are being seen by more and more people. Here are the very best directors working right now.
