The Complex NFL Power Rankings, Week 2

After months of anticipation it seemed like Week 1 of NFL action lived up to the hype. We had one amazing rookie debut thanks to RGIII (along with few terrible—yes you, Brandon Weeden). Peyton Manning showed that a season-long layoff had no effect on his incredible arm and Adrian Peterson proved he hasn't really lost a step either.

If Week 1 proved anything it wasn't so much about if you won or loss but how you did it. Do the teams that eked out a victory against sub-par squads deserve a spot above those that lost to legitimate contenders? Does RGIII's ridiculous performance mean he'll lead the 'Skins to the Super Bowl and be a candidate for regular season MVP? Will we have to hear loudmouth Rex Ryan brag about his team's offensive prowess all year? We don't have a crystal ball but we'll do our best to separate the contenders from the pretenders in Week 2 of Complex NFL Power Rankings.

It's difficult to expect the Dolphins to go into Houston for the first game of the season with a rookie quarterback and expect them to come out on top. While Miami's starting QB Ryan Tannehill did struggle and throw 3 interceptions, that was expected. It's not time to bench him just yet. Give him another game to prove his worth before calling for his head. —Jose Martinez

For the Colts to be successful, they’ll have to prove that they not only did right by drafting Andrew Luck first overall, but also in letting Peyton Manning walk. In Denver’s opener Peyton Manning looked like, well, Peyton Manning torching the Steelers 3-4 defense to the tune of 250 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Luck on the other hand played like his smile looks—horrendous. Luck, like many rookies, underthrew go routes, turned the ball over four times, and looked panicked in the pocket.

We could be prudent and take a rational approach to judging his professional football debut, but what fun would that be? Power rankings are all about snap judgments and unfair indictments that change from week-to-week. The Colts should quit now, waive Luck, and pray to the ghost of Johnny Unitas that the franchise lands Matt Barkley with the first pick of 2013 NFL Draft. We’re joking. Well about cleaning house, anyway. The Colts still suck and that’s no laughing matter. —Sean Evans

This game was pitiful from beginning to end for Buffalo. Mark Sanzhez looked like an elite quarterback and Tim Tebow even recovered an onside kick. Luckily, Buffalo has a good chance to bounce back early in the season with back-to-back favorable match-ups on the horizon (Chiefs and Browns, respectively). If they fail, you could always just pull a Mario Williams and blame the replacement refs. That seems to be the new it thing to do these days. Oh yeah, and they lost wide receiver Daivd Nelson for the year with a torn knee ligament. #whenitrainsitpours —Jose Martinez

Week 1 was pretty much a representation of the past two seasons for the Raiders: mediocre at best. Sure Carson Palmer didn't throw any interceptions but he only had one TD and was sacked three times. Oakland's running game wasn't great either as Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson combined for a total 45 yards on 17 rushing attempts (surprisingly this was better than the Charges who only mustered 32 rushing yards).

A big part of Monday night's L falls on the shoulders of the Raiders' special teams unit. Three punts were botched and San Diego took advantage of each mistake. Oakland's regular long snapper Jon Condo went out due to injury and the back-up Travis Goethel came in and fucked things up. Remember folks, everyone one of those 53 players on that roster can have an impact. Even if it's the back-up long snapper. —Ralph Warner

This Week: vs. Redskins, 4:05 Sunday

The Rams had a chance in this one with the game going down to the wire before Matthew Stafford's game-winning drive. Along with the clock getting stuck at 2:38 remaining in the game, some say the Lions got an extra timeout, but you can't put a loss on the clock messing up, the Rams simply didn't shut the door on the Lions and close this one out.

Although the Rams continued their losing ways from last season where they went an abysmal 2 - 14, there were some positives to take away from this one. Quarterback Sam Bradford went 17 of 25 for for 198 yards and one TD, and kicker Greg Zeurlein nailed all three of his field goal attempts, and the defense picked off Stafford three times, despite getting lit up for 355 yards, and letting Calvin "Megatron" Johnson to pull in six passes for 111 yards. If they keep the games this close, the young fellas of the Rams might be able to pull out more than three wins this season on the road to a better season under new head coach Jeff Fisher. Well, maybe. —David Whitely

This Week: vs. Jaguars, 1:00 Sunday

This one hurt. Jacksonville could have easily started the year 1-0. Instead, they wasted a masterful drive by Blaine Gabbert in the fourth quarter. And, in the waning seconds of the game, were picked apart by Christian Ponder (you read that right), watched a deflating 55-yard field goal sail through the uprights at the end of regulation, and ultimately lost to the Vikings in overtime. Ouch. If there’s an upside for the Jags, they had a solid defense last year which, but for the final :20 of the game, played well.

Blaine Gabbert looked poised at quarterback and the AFC South is perhaps the most woeful conference in football. If, miraculously, they can pull of a win next week against the Texans, Jags fans can call Sunday a wash. Something tells us this one’s going to sting for a while, though. —Sean Evans

This Week: vs. Saints, 1:00 Sunday
Cam and Co. had pretty high hopes coming into year two of the Newton/Rivera era but their tough week one loss to a division rival in the Buccaneers told us a few things about this team. First off their running game was one step below "pitiful" as they tallied up 13 rushes for a grand total of 10 yards against the Bucs. This should terrify all Panthers fans because as great as Cam is as a passer, he's still learning to take care of the ball and past the ageless wonder that is Steve Smith they're receivers are average at best.

One shining light in the loss though was that even with their run game being so terrible, their defense was able to step up and keep them in the game until the very end losing only by six. Last year if the offense got held in check like that there was no way they'd even be within a hiss of the other team as they only held opponents to 16 points or less three times. Week 2 will be astronomical for them as they face another division rival in New Orleans who's coming off a tough loss themselves. —Elias Ahmed

This Week: @ Bengals, 1:00 Sunday

This was an ugly game, so ugly I feel like vomiting just writing about it. The 28-year-old rookie QB Brandon Weeden was sacked twice by the Eagles and sacked once by the American flag. He also threw for 4 interceptions and had a passer rating of 5.1—yup, you read that right.

On the bright side, rookie RB Trent Richardson had a couple impressive runs on his way to a modest 39 yards rushing and Browns LB D'Qwell Jackson had himself a pick-6 to keep the Browns in the game. Both teams pretty much stunk it up. Cleveland faces their in-state and division rivals in the Bengals next week in what's sure to be a doozy. —Angel Diaz

In the NFL (and another industry) you simply can't get by without solid D. Ayo! The Chiefs were missing four defensive starters on Sunday including Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali and as a result they were trounced by the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan carved them up by completing 21 of 31 pass attempts for 299 yards and three TDs. All of the blame can't be put on the defense though. Matt Cassel's three turnovers (two INTs and one fumble) helped seal KC's fate, too. —Ralph Warner

The Patriots win home openers, that’s what they do. In fact, the last time New England lost the first game of a season, Jake Locker was a birthday away from his driver’s permit. Also, when last these two teams met, Tennessee lost by 59 points. When you start the conversation that way, the Titans blowout loss to the Pats Sunday almost feels like a win. Well, at least until you look at Chris Johnson’s stat line.

Johnson’s inability to articulate a single coherent sentence hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the league’s mouthiest players. All offseason he billed himself as a freakishly improved version of himself. Then, he ran the ball 11 times for four yards on Sunday. You don’t have to be a fantasy football league commissioner to know that the Titans running back needs to vastly advance his production for the Titans to have a chance. —Sean Evans

This Week: vs. Dallas, 4:05 Sunday

Blown opportunities killed the Seahwaks in this loss. They were getting great field position for most of the game, but just couldn't put the ball in the end zone, going 1 for 4 in the red zone. There was a 52-yard punt return, an interception by Richard Sherman set up great field position, an extra time out given by mistake by the replacement refs, and solid special teams returns put the the Seahawks in positions to get touchdowns, but they just couldn't get the ball over the goal line and settled for field goals.

On top of this, the offensive line was just terrible. Wilson was under constant pressure the entire time and didn't have any time in the pocket to find receivers. It doesn't look good for this team as they go up against an even tougher defense in Dallas this week. Feeling pressure upfront from linebacker Demarcus Ware, Wilson is goint to have to get the ball up even quicker to survive this game because his offensive line won't protect him. —David Whitely

What an opportunity for Kevin Kolb. After losing his starting job in the preseason to John Skelton, Kolb comes in and saves the day for the Cardinals after Skelton goes down with an injury. Operating the no huddle offense, Kolb went 6 for 8 and 66 yards to win the game. We wouldn't call this one a quality win because it is against a bad team in arguably the worst division, and against a rookie quarterback who looked like a deer in headlights.The defense put constant pressure on rookie Russell Wilson, but don't expect the same success this week against Tom Brady and the Patriots. The Pats have a better offensive live, and it's Tom Brady (no explanation necessary). —David Whitely

This Week: vs. Browns, 1:00 Sunday

Bengals QB Andy Dalton looked like a rookie vs. the punishing Ravens defense. Dalton was sacked four times and had a QB rating of 65.3. Benjarvus Green-Ellis a.k.a. The Law Firm tried to help with 91 rushing yards, but it wasn't enough. The Ravens didn't need Terrell Suggs to help dismantle Cincy. The Bengals had no problems moving the ball with 322 total yards, but only converted 4 third downs on 15 attempts. Cincy was down 17-10 at halftime, but could only manage a field goal in the second half. At least the Bengals have the Browns to look forward to next week. —Angel Diaz

Life isn't all about being the best all the time, sometimes it's about just making sure you fuck up less than your opponent. Such was the case for San Diego on Monday night. In a lackluster game the Chargers got the W simply by capitalizing on the Raiders miscues (three botched punts) and getting by with their mediocre offense. Putting up 258 total yards is nothing to be happy about but picking up the win in Week 1 is. #justsayin' —Ralph Warner

This Week: @ Giants, 1:00 Sunday

It wasn't pretty, but Tampa Bay fans can't complain after their week one win against the Panthers. Josh Freeman didn't wow anybody but also didn't make any big mistakes, rookie Doug Martin looked really good and nearly cracked the century mark, and their defense was extremely solid against a potentially explosive unit in Carolina. It was a nice opening win for new coach Greg Schiano and was a division win they can use to build confidence going into the next couple weeks.

With that said, they'll need it when they head up the coast and go up against the Super Bowl champs next week. They're going to have to bring their A game and control the flow like they did in week one if they want to go 2-0. We're not saying it's impossible for them to win the South but it's gonna be tough for them to roll through their divisional opponents on a consistent basis with the talent level those teams possess. With a wounded Saints team and unproven commodities in Carolina and Atlanta, Tampa Bay's got a puncher's chance. —Elias Ahmed

We give the Vikings one single clap for their victory this week. Why? Because it was against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The real applause goes to two individuals on the Vikes. The first is rookie kicker Blair Walsh, who made all four of his attempts, including a 55-yarder to end regulation and the game-winner in OT. The second, obviously, goes to Adrian Peterson, who looked fantastic in his first regular season game back since having his left knee surgically repaired. Peterson supported Christian Ponder's 20 for 26 performance with 86 yards and two TDs on only 17 carries. At least Minne won't be a complete joke this year. —Tony Markovich

This Week: @ Panthers, 1:00 Sunday

Wait what? The Redskins with a rookie starting at QB and a rookie starting at RB came into New Orleans post a Bounty Gate scandal that would undoubtedly get the Who Dat nation hyped and won 40-32? Yup, that actually happened. Honestly the game wasn't even that close if you'd believe us, the Saints scored off of a punt block return for a TD late in the first half and tallied another TD in the fourth on a fourth down play that the 'Skins shouldn't have let happen. Granted they were without Jonathan Vilma they're defensive captain who was just reinstated and had their third string coach at the helm, this was still a bad sign for the Saints. They are vulnerable right now. Drew Brees didn't look like Drew Brees for most of the game, their defense made RG3 look like Aaron Rodgers, their run game didn't show up whatsoever, and penalties ended up costing them big (107 yards worth).

They're still the Saints though and only lost by eight after being down 30-14. Week 2 will be just as big for them as it is for their opponents in Carolina as it's gonna be tough going 0-2 against NFC opponents. We wouldn't bet against them, but lets just say they're going to have to prove themselves again before we can call them the top dog in the NFC South or NFC again. —Elias Ahmed

This Week: vs. Ravens, 1:00 Sunday

If you tuned into sports talk radio in Philly for more than five minutes on Monday afternoon, you would've sworn the Eagles actually lost Sunday. Why? Well, because even though they got a W against Cleveland, the game included so many fails that it was hard to get too excited about the start of the Eagles season. Michael Vick threw four interceptions. Head coach Andy Reid inexplicably called 56 passing plays. The Eagles committed 12 penalties in one of the ugliest games of Week 1. And…well, we think you get it. The Eagles stunk. So, while it's good that they won the game, there's still plenty of room for improvement. —Chris Yuscavage

The Steelers won the time of possession battle, but still lost the war. Peyton Manning and the Broncos were on a mission to put the Tebow era behind them. Pittsburgh had to do without two of their best defensive players in James Harrison and Ryan Clark. The Steel Curtain was no match for Peyton's hurry-up offense, giving up 17 fourth quarter points. Big Ben had a decent game, but was sacked five times and his lone interception while down by six with two minutes left proved to be costly. The Steelers play the Jets next week in what should be a good, old-fashioned slug fest. —Angel Diaz

We knew Robert Griffin III was going to be good. We just didn't know he was going to be this good, this fast. In the 'Skins opener, he picked the New Orleans defense apart and threw for 320 yards, the fourth-most passing yards in an NFL debut ever. But, more importantly, he didn't turn the ball over and looked like a veteran in the pocket, all while playing in one of the craziest road environments in the NFL. Does that mean he's going to lead Washington to the Super Bowl this year? We won't hold our breath. But, it does mean that Chocolate City finally has someone to get excited about playing QB. Don't look now, but the Redskins bandwagon is about to fill up quick. —Chris Yuscavage

Matt Stafford might have thrown three interceptions (all in the first half), but he also threw the game-winning TD with 10 seconds remaining, as the Detroit Lions squeaked out an ugly win against an even uglier team in the St. Louis Rams. After struggling in the first nine drives of the game, Stafford doubled his total yardage in the final two, going 9-9 to take the victory. Kevin Smith accounted for two of the Lions' scores, and Calvin Johnson six catches for 111 yards. Considering this was against a pretty anemic Rams team, this wasn't exactly the start Detroit had in mind. —Tony Markovich

Preseason? We're talking about preseason? After the Jets struggled to score a single touchdown in the first 3 tune-up games, Gang Green, led by Mark Sanchez with his 266 passing yards and 3 TDs, came out attacking on the offensive side of the ball early and often. Yes, the Bills didn't play well defensively and New York will be challenged this Sunday by the Steelers' D, but you gotta like how Sanchez was able to make the quick read and throw on target...most of the time. Whatever you're doing Eva Longoria, keep it up. No pun intended. —Jose Martinez

What does humble pie taste like? Has anyone out there ever tasted it? Seriously, is it something we should try sometime? To find out, we might have to go ahead and holler at a few of these Giants players. Because, after their season-opening loss to the Cowboys, that's exactly what head coach Tom Coughlin was serving in their locker room. "Take a bite of humble pie," he said. "That's basically what it is. It brings you right back down to earth." Mmmm! Sounds…Wait, that doesn't sound good at all.

For the sake of all the Giants fans in the 'Plex office and all over the tri-state area, let's hope that humble pie isn't on the menu too often this season. The defending Super Bowl champs should be eating better than that. —Chris Yuscavage

This Week: vs. Bears, 8:20 Thursday

Who would have thought that the Packers (the same squad that won the Super Bowl two years ago and the same squad that didn't lose a single game until week 15 of last year) would be the only NFC North team without a win after the first week of play? Well, if you take into account that Green Bay was playing the San Francisco 49ers, it really shouldn't be a shock. Going up against a defense that only allowed an insanely low 77.2 rushing yards per game last year (15.4 less than the No. 2 Ravens!), Cedric Benson didn't stand a chance in his cheesy debut. He touched the ball a scattered nine times, and the Pack only accumulated a measly 45 yards.

Despite starting the game on the defensive side with a Clay Matthews sack, the same defense that had the worst statistical year last season (411.6 total YPG allowed) failed to hold strong, allowing Alex Smith to pick and choose which open receiver he wanted. This team's offense will no doubt keep it in every single game this year, but the defense looks to be a major source of trouble, once again. —Tony Markovich

Giants fans had just one question after last Wednesday's season-opening loss: Who the %&^* is Kevin Ogletree?! It's a valid one, too, considering that Ogletree wasn't on too many peoples' radars prior to the game (don't try and lie and say you were thinking about drafting him to your fantasy team, either!). But, he scored twice during the Cowboys' first game of the season and helped Tony Romo rack up more than 300 yards passing as the 'Boys proved that they can hold onto a lead in the fourth quarter, which is something they struggled with all last season.

Their only problem now? Ogletree won't surprise many other teams out there. So, let's see if the 'Boys can keep it up—and continue to hold onto leads. If so, Jerry Jones might finally have a playoff team on his hands.—Chris Yuscavage

This Week: vs. Broncos, 8:30 Monday

The ATLiens look like the class of the NFC South right now, but don't get to doing the dirty bird too soon. Good News: Matt Ryan was damn near flawless, Julio Jones looks like he'll be as good as advertised, and they dropped 40 as they picked up a quality road win. Bad News: They won't put up 40 every game, their defense hasn't been truly tested yet, the run game looked pedestrian, and most importantly it's still Week 1 and they haven't won a playoff game since '04.

We'd love to believe they'll keep it up all year and take it to the playoffs, but until they face a couple bigger tests and ball out like they did this Sunday, the jury is still out on them. Week 2 seems to be a far more telling matchup as the Broncos and Peyton showed they're no slouch team on offense, and tout a defense ready and willing to get some pressure on Matty Ice. We could easily see Atlanta anywhere from first to third by the seasons end, so the preemptive nod should be taken with a grain of salt Falcons fans. —Elias Ahmed

The good news is the Texans looked dominant on Sunday. The bad news is they faced off against Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill who played like the second coming of David Klingler. But a win’s a win, even if it is against a hyped dipshit manufactured by Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. Arian Foster punched the ball in twice. Matt Schaub threw for 266 yards, including a touchdown to Andre Johnson. After Week 1, the Texans certainly look like the class of the AFC South. On defense, JJ Watt was the only thing that looked respectable out of the Big Ten this weekend. The Texans defensive lineman sacked Tannehill twice and slapped a couple weak pass attempts back into bewildered face of the Dolphin's quarterback. —Sean Evans

Peyton back. Peyton back. There's all these Mile High bitches screaming that Peyton back. Well, he is. In his first game since January 2011, Peyton Manning showed virtually no rust as he completed 19 of 26 pass attempts for 253 yards and two TDs. The Broncos' D also contributed to the W by sacking Ben Roethlisberger five times and forcing an interception to leave Big Ben with a 79.7 QB rating. No fourth quarter miracles were needed in this one and if Peyton stays healthy week 1 can be a sign of things to come. —Ralph Warner

Every offensive question that the Bears had lingering from offseason acquisitions and post-injury recoveries was given a 100 percent positive answer Sunday against the new Luck-led Indianapolis Colts. Cutler looked great in his reunion with former teammate Brandon Marshall, throwing for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to Marshall's nine receptions for 119 and a TD, rookie sleeper Alshon Jeffery delivered with three catches for 80 yards and a TD of his own. New backfield addition Michael Bush pounded out two touchdowns behind newly resigned RB Matt Forte's 120 total yards. Add that to their dominating offense that forced five turnovers, and you get a team that will be competing not only for the division crown, but a chance for the NFC crown, as well. —Tony Markovich

The Patriots thrashed a lowly AFC opponent in the Titans on Sunday, what's new, right? Actually, the Pats looked a little different, thanks to an effective defense that looked nothing like their 2011 version that gave up the 2nd-most yards in the league (411 per game). Is this a sign of great things to come for the New England D? It depends. Are they still placing cameras in other teams' training facilities? —Jose Martinez

Joe Cool put on a near flawless performance as the Ravens gave their division rivals a Maddenesque ass-whooping. Flacco threw for 299 yards on 21 of 29 passing with two touchdowns. The god Ed Reed did what the god does best and returned an INT to the house. B-More only punted twice and put up a goose egg in the turnover department, pure domination. The 49ers were the pride of the NFC West last season, and they're looking to keep that trend going after an impressive win over the Packers on Sunday.
