Drake x Nike Collaboration Timeline

Drake's name hasn't been a constant in the headlines lately. And yes, as much as we are interested to see the next chapter of his beef with Kendrick Lamar, that isn't the only thing that the rapper is doing right now. He's also still consistently dropping new gear through his NOCTA sub-label with Nike.

“It didn’t mean anything unless it had a Swoosh.”

This is what Nike meant to Drake while growing up. And he’s certainly made his love for the Swoosh known throughout his career. He shouts out the brand in his lyrics. He regularly wears Nike tracksuits and Air Maxes when he’s on tour or moving around during his off time. And over the past decade he’s made various products with the company, which has culminated in the launch of  his sportswear line NOCTA. He’s even filmed a music video on the Nike campus in Beaverton.

With NOCTA's new collab with Arthur Kar's L'Art De L'Automobile finally hitting retailers today, take a look back at Drake’s long history with Nike.

Pusha T spoiled it. Amid a heated back-and-forth between both rappers, Pusha T dropped his response to Drake’s “Duppy Freestyle'' titled “The Story of Adidon.” Roughly two minutes into the freestyle over Jay-Z’s “The Story of O.J.,” Push raps, “Adonis is ya son, and he deserves more than an Adidas press run.” The lyric alluded to Drake’s apparent Adidas line that was scheduled to be announced, Adidon, which was named after his then-yet-to-be-revealed son, Adonis. Obviously, the potential Adidas deal soured after the track’s release. Drake x Adidas never was. By August of that year, Drake was a proud member of the Swoosh once again, pledging his allegiance during his guest verse on Travis Scott’s smash hit “Sicko Mode” by rapping, “Checks over stripes, that’s what I like.”

Whether you’re his biggest fan or biggest hater, Drake’s music will always get people talking. It’s a guarantee even if we know it’s coming. When it comes out of nowhere, it turns up the attention just a bit. That’s exactly what happened in July 2020 when the video for UK rapper Headie One’s “Only You Freestyle” dropped featuring a guest verse from The Boy. The verse was one of Drake’s best of the year, but the video also revealed some new merch as well. As the camera pans across a dimly lit garage filled with luxury cars, viewers get a glimpse at the black and yellow “CLB” hoodies everyone is wearing. This was the first time we got a real look at Drake’s Certified Lover Boy merch and the hoodie, which also came in grey, immediately had fans anticipating its release.

If “Only You Freestyle” was the preview, the “Laugh Now Cry Later” video was the main event. The video for the lead single off Certified Lover Boy featured Drake with his friends like Odell Beckham Jr., Kevin Durant, and comedian Druski, treating Nike’s campus in Beaverton, Oregon like a playground. Riding golf carts across the lawn, putting up shots in the gym with KD, jet skiing in Lake Nike, and filling dozens of bags at the Nike employee store, Drake and friends looked like they were having a blast. Along with the same “CLB” hoodies we saw before, Drake also rocked a pink bomber jacket covered in heart stitching that immediately got people talking. Is the video the greatest Nike ad ever? It’s certainly a contender.
