During the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, a new trailer (as expected) was released for the live-action reimagining of the classic aquatic tale, this time led by Halle Bailey as Ariel. Bailey is joined in the cast of the Rob Marshall-directed surefire megahit by Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Jonah Hauer-King, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem, Simone Ashley, Lorena Andrea, and Melissa McCarthy.

In June of last year, the latter—who stars in Marshall’s film as Ursula—praised Bailey’s much-anticipated performance in the long-awaited revisit of the 1989 animated Disney classic.

“It’s so beautiful. … It’s just different,” she said on Watch What Happens Live of the strength of Bailey’s vocals on the live-action musical, though she was also careful to note that she can’t reveal much about the production. “That girl has got roots down and she sings from her heart. When I heard it, there were, like, seven of us that just burst out crying because we had not heard [the song].”

Bailey herself previously detailed how she felt about taking on the beloved character, saying “words can’t describe how immensely honored” she is to step into the role of “the mermaid of my dreams.”

The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26. See the new trailer up top.
