It’s no secret that the state of American journalism is sort of in shambles in the year 2018. Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press chronicles two major recent debacles in the journalism world: the Peter Thiel-backed Hulk Hogan lawsuit against Gawker media (which lead to Gawker’s closure) and casino owner Sheldon Adelson’s purchase of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The documentary specifically examines the terrifying lengths that people with money will go to silence journalists for their own selfish gain. It also ties these attacks on journalism to our current president’s outright hostility to the press as a whole. Nobody Speak isn’t the most reassuring watch, but its essential viewing to understand our current political and journalistic climate.
