The first official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s hugely anticipated Oppenheimer has arrived.

The film tells the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), who spearheaded the Manhattan Project, which led to the development of the first atomic bomb. Nolan recently spoke with Total Film about the challenges he faced when attempting to recreate a nuclear weapon detonation through the use of practical effects.

“I think recreating the Trinity test without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on,” Nolan said. “Andrew Jackson—my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on—was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there—there were huge practical challenges.”

Nolan has assembled a star-studded cast headlined by Murphy in the title role, Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife Katherine, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director General Leslie Groves Jr., and Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Other notable actors in the cast include Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Jack Quaid, and Rami Malek.

Oppenheimer is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
