Lil Wayne, fittingly, is the latest guest on Tony Hawk and Jason Ellis’ Hawk vs Wolf podcast. During the ensuing hour-long discussion, Weezy spoke at length about his longtime love for the art of skateboarding, including how the seriousness with which he treats this part of life sometimes comes at a surprise for fellow artists. Ty Dolla Sign, for example, once jokingly blamed Weezy after ending up in the hospital with a skating-related injury.
“These guys probably skated and they probably done this when they were younger and ain’t picked up a board in years and probably thinking that’s the same thing I’m doing,” Weezy told the co-hosts just under 17 minutes into the interview. “And when Ty got there, you know, he notices that, ‘Wow, we not even talking because Wayne is really skating. He’s serious. He’s been trying one trick for three hours, ain’t event said what’s up to me.’”
Sure enough, Weezy and Ty made headlines together back in September of last year after linking up at a skate park in the Los Angeles area. Later that year, Ty revealed he had been hospitalized after a skating accident.
Deeper into the Hawk vs Wolf chat, Weezy mentioned the accident, adding that he initially thought Ty had been involved in an even more serious incident.
“So Ty sends me a clip, like, you know, later on. He is fully, he is in a hospital bed with tubes tied up to him,” he said around the 41:36 mark. “He’s like, ‘Man, messing with you.’ I’m like, boy, did you get shot? Who shot you? He sent me the clip after—I’m thinking he’s about to really send me a clip of him coming out a club or something and somebody shooting—[but] it’s a clip of him trying to drop in. He drops in and ate shit.”
Wayne recalled feeling grateful that Ty was in a position to be able to text him directly, explaining that the situation could have gone a different direction.
“It was him texting me, like, ‘Man, messing with you,’” Weezy reiterated. “He was like, ‘Man, I did not know you skate for real.’ He was like, ‘After a session with you, I said fuck it, I probably could drop in too.’ No.”
