SZA, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, and Mark Ronson Have 3 New Songs in the Can

Though SZA has threatened to quit music in the past, leaving doesn’t look like it’s in her immediate future. Back in October, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she revealed that she’s working on a collaborative album with Tame Impala founder Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson. SZA wouldn’t place a label on the kind of music they’re making, noting, “When you try to label it, you remove the option for it to be limitless. It diminishes the music.” Now, it seems SZA is re-dedicated to making earnest music. In a new interview with the New York Times, the collaboration sounds real, and not just a one-off: SZA, Ronson, and Parker have already recorded three songs.

With Ronson’s penchant for pop, Parker’s for psychedelic rock, and SZA’s for hip-hop, R&B, and pop, a joint effort between the three will certainly be intriguing. And hopefully, the unreleased SZA song that Ronson and Parker debuted at Governor’s Ball last year during their DJ set will be one we see very soon.

It’s no secret that SZA has had a breakout year—and she can’t even believe it’s happening. In the New York Times piece, she further spoke on her insecurities and the release of Ctrl. “My anxiety had been telling me the whole time that [the album] sucked,” she said, explaining her disbelief at being nominated for five Grammy Awards. “You wonder, ‘Are you delusional? Is something wrong with you?’ I never imagined anything like this would happen in a million years.”

SZA’s latest release is the Black Panther soundtrack lead single “All the Stars,” with Top Dawg Entertainment labelmate Kendrick Lamar. It was recently announced that TDE’s president Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and Lamar will be producing the soundtrack album.
