We’ve barely recouped from the hefty debate between T.I. and Gucci Mane over who invented trap music last week, and now Chief Keef has prompted another discussion regarding another hip-hop subgenre, mumble rap. On Tuesday night, he took to Twitter, writing, “Do you guys love me for creating Mumble???” Of course the tweet went viral.

Keef has claimed he invented the new style of rap, which is marked by its slurred speech and references to drugs—and some even say lacks lyricism and technical skill. A lot of rappers fall under the subgenre, including Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Desiigner, and Lil Pump, among others. However, not everyone likes the label, including Trippie Redd.

Keef is credited with placing a national spotlight on Chicago’s drill scene, and many have considered him to be a mumble rapper, too. But Black Thought laid claim to the title back in December in an interview with Rolling Stone, “Lots of people are saying that I shut down mumble rap in one 10-minute setting. But that wasn't my intention, because mumble rap—if we go back—that's something I invented.”

He continued, “I invented rapping without actually using the words. With songs like 'Don't Say Nuthin,' freestyles like 'New Year's at Jay Dee's,' I essentially invented mumble rap, where you go for many bars without saying any words. And when I did it, it came from a place of being inspired by scatting.”

The comment followed his legendary 10-minute Funkmaster Flex freestyle.
