J.R. Smith has admitted that he probably should have been wiser with his money during his time in the NBA.
Smith, who retired from the league following his championship win with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, sat down for an interview on The Richard Show, shared on Thursday (June 18), and was asked what he's processed and evaluated since his basketball career came to an end.
"The first thing that comes to mind? How much money I wasted." Smith said with a laugh. "Half the shit I bought in the last 10 years, I barely use."
The two-time NBA champion has dedicated a lot of his free time these days to enjoying golf, and even admitted that he tends to wear the same golf outfits. "Even the watches, buying all these fancy-ass watches and shit, I don’t wear them," he said. "I don’t go anywhere to wear them! Why did I spend all of this money on this stuff that I don’t really use?"
Smith said that his spending habits got to the point where he had far more cars than he needed. "I had seven cars at one point when we were in Cleveland," he explained. "I’m like, 'Why did I have seven cars?'" While making it clear that he's not hurting for money, he said he'd certainly be better off if he didn’t have so much buyer’s remorse.
J.R. Smith recently linked up with his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates in the United Kingdom for a championship reunion. The group was also seen playing golf at the Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland, which they chronicled on social media. Kyrie Irving, however, was not present, and Smith later seemingly revealed it was because he "ghosted" them all.
