Pinkett Smith opened up on social media at the end of last year about her ongoing battle with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. The actress took to Instagram where she shared that the disorder had begun making her lose a significant amount of hair, but said that instead of trying to hide it, she would be embracing it. “Now at this point, I can only laugh,” Pinkett Smith said as she laughed in her Instagram video. “Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here.”

Pinkett Smith also made light of her hair loss in the caption for her post, saying that she would need a lower haircut to blend the new line on her scalp, but that she wouldn’t let it bother her. “Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something,” she wrote. “Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!”

The actress first addressed the disorder back in 2018, speaking on her Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk about what it was like to suddenly start losing her hair. “It was terrifying when it first started,” Jada shared at the time. “I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’” Jada has since embraced her hair loss and has become an advocate for others with the disorder to feel ashamed about looking different.
