Robert De Niro looks like he's been paying attention to recent viral trends, taking part in one himself and catching Martin Scorsese by surprise in the process.
The legendary actor thought he'd get in on the goodnight trend, calling the acclaimed movie director on the phone to exchange some before-bed pleasantries in a hilarious video captured by people near both of them.
In the video, Scorsese answers the phone to De Niro telling him that he’s “calling to say goodnight.” The actor then tells Scorsese to “sleep tight.”
After their brief back and forth, De Niro FaceTimed Scorsese to show him that he’s watching a children’s TV show. The two confirmed that they would see each other the following day before getting back off the phone.
Scorsese then spoke to the person recording the exchange and expressed his confusion. “No, he calls four times and then you finally realize it’s him and then he goes ‘How are you doing? I’ll see you tomorrow,’” said Scorsese. “The whole thing is a big mystery.”
While most of social media found the exchange between the two longtime collaborators to be funny, one person who wasn’t amused was director Boots Riley. "This is funny? Ok.” he wrote.
De Niro and Scorsese join a slew of other celebrities to take part in the TikTok trend that centers around guys calling their male friends to wish them goodnight and see their confused reactions.
Radio show host Big Boy previously shared a video of him calling Xzibit, O.T. Genasis, and Top Dawg from TDE, who were all shocked that he called them.
"What the fuck is you talking about," said O.T. while laughing. "Man, you don’t call no ni**a phone and say that."
Xzibit was similarly bewildered but decided to return the friendly message. "Alright, good night Big," he said.
Top from TDE, however told him to redirect that message to a woman. "Good night? You need to be calling your side piece to tell her goodnight," said Top while laughing. "And you call me like I’m your side piece? What’s going on man?"
Before Big Boy, Jake Paul went viral for calling Adin Ross and capturing his confused reaction. "No way you just called me to say goodnight," Ross said.
