It has been announced that Joker: Folie à Deux is set to premiere on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after the release of the first film, Deadline reports. Little is known about the film besides the interesting French reference attached in the title, which is a medical term referring to a mental disorder that impacts two or more people. Production for the movie is reportedly set to begin sometime in December.

The first Joker film became a pop culture moment, with Pheonix’s unique portrayal of the titular supervillain spawning a series of think-pieces and deep dives into the character’s psyche. It grossed $335.4 million at the domestic box office and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever globally with a whopping $1.07 billion. It was also nominated for 11 Oscars and went home with two.

Joker was notably not set in the current DC extended universe and was a standalone film, but given Warner Bros. recent axing of Batgirl and the upcoming The Flash film set to possibly reset the timeline, this could be the moves necessary for Phoenix’s Joker to become cannon in the DCEU. Ben Affleck will also be playing Batman in The Flash and the upcoming Aquaman 2, despite rumors swirling that he had no interest in pursuing the role any further.

The rest of the cast or plot for Joker: Folie à Deux has yet to be revealed but a report from June suggested that Lady Gaga was involved in talks to play Harley Quinn.
