Backxwash is back already, with her album BLACK SAILOR MOON 2 dropping later this year. In a tweet to her followers early Monday morning, the Montreal-based metal-infused rapper hinted that BLACK SAILOR MOON 2 will be “even more noisy and abrasive” than last year’s effort I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses.
Though we don’t know when the album will be released yet, the title BLACK SAILOR MOON 2 refers back to her 2018 EP BLACK SAILOR MOON, and some fans are hoping this means the upcoming record will be a sequel. This will be the fifth year in a row that she releases a project.
In 2020, Backxwash won the Polaris Prize for her album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It. In an interview with Complex Canada before her big win, she talked about the lack of exposure she had in her home province of Quebec: “When you look at how hip-hop in Quebec looks at it, it’s more I’m the first trans rapper to make it to Polaris. They’d rather say that than claim me. It’s funny how in the Montreal hip-hop scene I’m a bit isolated.”
Complex named Backxwash’s last album I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses one of the best Canadian albums of 2021.
