Prosecutors Want YNW Melly to Submit to DNA Sample in Murder Case

The request is spurred by the presence of as many as three potential contributors in a sample taken from a piece of evidence found in a vehicle.

Prosecutors in YNW Melly’s murder case want the Just a Matter of Slime artist to submit to a DNA sample.

As first reported by TMZ, prosecutors are asking a judge to require Melly to comply with this request as part of what they describe as an effort to determine a match in connection with a jacket found during the investigation.

In Broward County court documents dated Oct. 14 and viewed by Complex, prosecutors asked the judge to require Melly to “submit to the taking of oral swab by a qualified technician” because—after the alleged October 2018 homicide in which two people were shot—evidence from inside the vehicle was submitted for DNA analysis and a subsequent report indicated that one alleged victim’s DNA was part of the sample.

Additionally, three other “potential contributors” were discovered. The contributor profiles, however, are not eligible to be entered into the Combined DNA Index System [CODIS], meaning any case-to-case match with other samples isn’t currently possible.

Among the justifications argued by prosecutors for the swab are that it would represent “no unreasonable intrusion” to the defendant and is “necessitated in the interest of justice.”

Last month, Complex and Spotify launched the latest installment of the Infamous podcast series, with the new season focusing on the story of YNW Melly and the murders of Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams. Melly, however, has claimed that his friends were killed in a drive-by shooting. The latest episode, “According to Law,” premiered earlier this week and can be found below.

The eight-episode season is hosted by Ace Hood, who says the new podcast—featuring writing and reporting by Shawn Setaro—aims to provide “more clarity” on the case and where it may be headed next.
