SZA Didn’t Believe in Her Platinum-Selling Song “Love Galore” (But Donald Glover Did)

Even though SZA's Ctrl single "Love Galore" sold a million copies, the singer was still doubtful that it was a hit. In a new cover story with The Fader, the singer spoke on a conversation she had with Donald Glover, regarding the song. “I think when ‘Love Galore’ went platinum, Donald [Glover] texted me like, Do you still think it sucks? And I was like, I dunno.”

SZA has been open about her struggles with her debut studio album, which came out last June, and has constantly expressed surprise that Ctrl has resonated with so many people, especially young women. “I didn't even fuck with my own album, so I was so confused and almost, like, angry that everyone fucked with it so much. It meant everything I felt about myself was wrong. And it was just like, If that’s not the truth, then what is the truth?”

SZA was again startled when this year's Grammy nominations rolled in, and she was the most nominated woman at the 2018 awards. While the entire internet was outraged that she didn't win anything that night, she's taken it all in stride. “I'm not as mad as I thought I would be. I didn't have any expectations, actually. That's why I wasn't super upset,” she said, adding, “Perhaps folks place too much importance on the entire situation in general, and place too much importance on the institution.”

Oh, and about that rumored album with Mark Ronson and Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker? There might be a chance we'll see that this year. When asked about releasing the project in 2018, SZA first thought the idea of it was ludicrous, but then backtracked: “Actually, 2018 just started. Definitely. Actually, I could do that shit in six months.”
