An airplane caught fire at Miami International Airport on Tuesday, resulting in several minor injuries.
Per a report from the Associated Press, the MD-82 plane in question was being used for a Red Air flight arriving in Florida from Santo Domingo at the time of the incident. In an initial statement shared to social media Tuesday evening, airport officials said the landing gear “in the nose of the plane” had collapsed, causing the fire.
A subsequent update from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed the blaze had since been placed “under control,” adding that three passengers had been taken to nearby hospitals. Their injuries, however, were not reported to be serious. While multiple reports initially cited the number of people aboard the plane as 126, a statement from a Red Air rep clarified there was a total of 130 passengers and 10 crew members on the craft at the time.
The incident, some of which was caught on video and widely shared on social media, resulted in delays for several other flights. Complex has reached out to a rep for the Miami International Airport for additional comment.
As of Tuesday night, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was sending investigators to Miami, with the expectation that the team would be at the scene at some point on Wednesday.
