The Atlanta home of former NBA player Vince Carter was broken into over the weekend, as armed burglars made off with nearly $100,000 in cash.

According to TMZ, the suspects broke into Carter’s home around 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, while the former Toronto Raptors player’s wife, Sondi, and their kids were in bed.

“Sondi said she was frightened by loud noises that had come from the front of her home, so she took her two boys, hid in a bedroom closet, and dialed 911,” the outlet reported.

An Atlanta police officer that was off-duty arrived and saw a man wearing a mask fleeing the property, before eventually getting into an SUV and taking off. The suspects entered Carter’s house after shattering a window. Cops discovered $16,100 in $100 bills scattered outside the gated home, as well a Glock 26 with an extended clip that they believe belonged to the thief.

The cash police found was only a part of the $100,000 Carter kept in a brown bag in his closet.

Carter officially announced his retirement from the NBA on June 25, 2020, after the league had suspended its season following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over his 22-year NBA career, Vince played for eight teams: the Toronto Raptors (1998-04), New Jersey Nets (2004-09), Orlando Magic (2009-10), Phoenix Suns (2010-11), Dallas Mavericks (2011-14), Memphis Grizzlies (2014-17), Sacramento Kings (2017-18), and Atlanta Hawks (2018-20).

Carter, 45, who now works as an ESPN analyst, has not publicly commented about the burglary.
