Colin Kaepernick asked for at least $20 million from the XFL when the two sides discussed the possibility of him making his return to football, according to Michael McCarthy of Sporting News. It's the same figure Kaepernick reportedly requested when another NFL competitor, the Alliance of American Football, reached out to him.
Earlier this month, Kaepernick and his former San Francisco 49ers teammate Eric Reid reached a settlement in their collusion case against the NFL. The exact amount that Kaep and Reid received is unknown as part of their confidentiality agreement. A resolution between both sides opens the door for the 31-year-old quarterback's possible return with the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots rumored to be his most likely landing spots in the near future.
If Kaepernick were to wind up on the Patriots or Panthers, he might be seen as a backup since Tom Brady and Cam Newton have firmly planted themselves as the starter for their respective teams. If Kaep doesn't make it back to the NFL as a starter, it's hard to see him commanding anywhere close to $20 million.
It's perfectly reasonable for Kaepernick to carry a high price tag for these spring football leagues, given his ability to draw in viewers who want to see him play again, and support his return to the sport after the issues he encountered with the NFL following his national anthem protest.
