Despite a 3-0 trouncing at the hands of Sweden on Wednesday, Mexico is still bound for the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup, thanks in part to South Korea.
Heading into today’s final set of matches in the group, South Korea was essentially playing for pride against the defending champion Germany squad. Even though Germany had been underwhelming in their previous two games, they could have still advanced and kept their World Cup dreams alive with a victory over South Korea. However, goals by Kim Young-Gwon and Son Heung-Min in the 92nd and 96th minute, respectively, led to a 2-0 South Korea win.
Mexico celebrated South Korea’s unlikely victory, hoisting their fans in the air, and anointing them as their brothers.
