Originally conceived as a spinoff of previous NBC hit The Office, Parks and Recreation overcame a rocky first season to become a comedy heavy hitter of its very own. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) is the ineffable deputy director of the parks and recreation department in Pawnee, Indiana. She’s a positive go-getter, which constantly has her at odds with her ironically anti-government boss Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) and the population of Pawnee, who are clueless at best and actively harmful at worst. Parks and Recreation boasts one of the very best comedy ensembles at the time, including Rashida Jones as down to earth nurse Ann Perkins, Aziz Ansari as underachieving subordinate Tom Haverford, Aubrey Plaza as a cynical intern, and Chris Pratt as Ann’s goofy ex-boyfriend Andy Dwyer. As Parks and Recreation aired over the years, it gradually revealed itself to be a love letter to the government process, and the good that it can do if the people are in charge are positive and loving. Parks and Recreation may be over, but there’s still a lot we can learn from its sunny and comical outlook on politics and life.
