Saw’s journey began all the way back in 2004 with the first iteration of a now 10-film series. While some of the characters and plot points of the franchise have changed over the years, its general principle has stayed the same: violence, gore, and, well, puzzles. This particular installment follows the infamous John “Jigsaw” Kramer as he hopes to find a cure for his cancer. Of course, things are far from black and white, and he finds out that he was scammed. So what does he do? He plays a game to get even with those who wronged him. If you’re a fan of the franchise like I am, you were probably already going to see this film anyway. Director Gareth Edwards is no stranger to the sci-fi genre. Following his most recent box office hits, Godzilla and Rogue One, Edwards is back with another action-packed adventure and a stacked cast at his disposal. Set in a dystopian future, The Creator unfolds against the backdrop of a relentless war between the human race and formidable forces of artificial intelligence.

John David Washington plays Joshua, a battle-hardened, former special forces operative who’s grappling with the disappearance of his wife, Maya (portrayed by the incredible Gemma Chan). Along his journey through the AI-occupied territory, Joshua ultimately discovers that the world-ending weapon is, in fact, an AI in the form of a young child.

With the potential threat of artificial intelligence on a steady rise in our own world, The Creator is surely going to strike a very relevant chord. I think you’d have a hard time arguing against Killers of the Flower Moon being the most anticipated movie featured on this list. Any time you have the formidable duo of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio cooking together, you know that you’re in for one of the movies of the year. I’m not going to get too much into the plot of this movie here, because if we’re being honest with ourselves, that is not what’s getting us into the theaters. All you need to know is that it stars Leonardo DiCaprio in 1920s Oklahoma, and tells the painful story of the real-life, violent dispossessing of the Osage people’s land. But I must say, if long movies are not for you, then you might just have to skip this one, as the runtime is coming in at a rather intimidating three hours and 26 minutes. —Ben Felderstein

From Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, comes Rustin, a biographical drama unearthing the often-overlooked, yet immensely powerful story of Bayard Rustin (played in the film by the incomparable Colman Domingo).

An advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., Rustin was an impassioned civil rights activist who played a vital role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington. However, Rustin was also an openly gay Black man, which practically erased him out of a history he helped create. The biopic sheds light on Rustin’s tremendous story, sharing it to a new generation that might be unfamiliar with it, and is sure to generate awards season buzz. —Yasmeen Hamadeh

Nia DaCosta is set to continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ever-expanding storyline with the fifth project, and third feature film, in its Phase 5 plan. The Marvels will be the first MCU movie, and the first superhero film in general, to feature three women as leads. And while most major plot points remain unknown, there are a few things that fans can expect going into the movie.

First and foremost is that body swapping will play a major role in the story. The film’s first trailer teases Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) having intertwined powers that they can use to switch between each other. Zawe Ashton will also play the main villain, a gender-swapped version of Dar-Benn, who’s a ruthless Kree revolutionary fighting to restore her homeland after a civil war.

How The Marvels ties into the MCU’s multiverse saga and long-term vision remains to be determined. If anything, it will at least take fans on a thrilling exploration of relatively new characters and their unique set of powers, as they try to protect the planet from cosmic threats.  With superhero fatigue on the rise, The Marvels will have a lot to do to keep the momentum alive when it arrives in theaters. —Jacob Kramer

Poor Things currently has a 100-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and if you’re familiar with Yorgos Lanthimos’ work, you’ll know that this comes as a complete surprise. The prolific director is known for his polarizing work that either warrants complete praise or complete confusion, but in the case of Poor Things, it seems to be unanimous across all critics that Lanthimos just released his best film yet.

Fans of Roald Dahl’s iconic children’s book are in for a delectable treat with Paul King’s Wonka. The movie, a prequel to the classic story most audiences are familiar with, is led by Timothée Chalamet and is set to provide a fresh look into the origins of the enigmatic candymaker.

As an origin story, Wonka promises to transport audiences back in time to experience the formative years of the chocolatier’s life. Through a blend of captivating storytelling and fantastical elements that have become synonymous with Dahl’s enchanted stories, the movie aims to explore Wonka’s early adventures, inspirations, and the events that ultimately led him to creating the magical world of his eponymous chocolate factory.

There will be conflicts, there will be challenges—but overall, the film promises to be a very family-friendly movie. Expect some musical scenes as King, who also directed the two Paddington movies, said the film is a way of celebrating “old-time musicals” with “a couple of really big numbers.” Whether you’ve seen every Willy Wonka iteration or are starting off new with Chalamet’s rendition, the timeless story of the world’s greatest chocolatier is something that everyone can find oozing comfort in. —Jacob Kramer

There really is no arguing at this point that most of what we’ve seen released as part of DC’s Extended Universe has been a mess. And the first Aquaman film is certainly no exception. Of course the second installment of the franchise, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, comes ripe with plenty of controversy thanks to none other than Amber Heard. As of now, how large Heard’s role will be in the film is still a mystery, but at one point there were rumors of her character being recast or even removed altogether. One positive note for Aquaman fans is, of course, that Jason Momoa is returning to reprise his role as the titular character, a near-perfect casting for the underwater hero. The movie’s director, James Wan, has promised that this sequel will be “taking it to the next level,” but time will tell if this is one of the few bright spots for DC or yet another blunder. —Ben Felderstein

Director: James Wan

Netflix has steadily been ramping up its slate of original feature films, and it looks like they’ve got another end-of-year banger in store with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. Snyder, the legendary filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, is teaming up with Netflix once again for an epic sci-fi franchise, with spinoff properties likely in the mix.

The film takes place in a peaceful farming colony, located on the edge of the galaxy, that's facing existential threats from armies led by the tyrannical ruler, Regent Balisarius (Ed Skrein). A young woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella), however, is determined to dismantle the impending evil threat and goes on a journey to recruit trained fighters from neighboring planets to push against the attack.

Although Snyder had originally intended for Rebel Moon to be part of the Star Wars universe, the idea was ultimately shut down following Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. That didn’t stop him from creating something very similar in story. In fact, one member of the cast described the film as “like Star Wars, but with violence, sex, and swearing.” And if that doesn’t get you excited for the new original IP, I’m not sure what else will. Considering the film is scheduled to hit Netflix just in time for Christmas, it’s safe to assume that Rebel Moon will be a buzzworthy title to watch this holiday season. —Jacob Kramer

Director: Zack Snyder

Starring: Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, and Ed Skrein.

Distributor: Netflix
