The Flash had a meager three-day opening weekend at the box office amid all the controversies that surrounded the film.

The Warner Bros. superhero flick brought in a mediocre $55.1 million over the three-day weekend, and $64 million over the four-day Juneteenth holiday weekend in 4,234 theaters, Deadline reports. The studio expected the movie to make $70-75 million over the three days, which it clearly missed by almost $20 million.

Coming in second place was Disney and Pixar’s Elemental, which opened with an anemic $29.5 million over three days and $33.3 million in four days. In third place was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which earned $27.8 million over the three-day weekend and $32.4 million over four days.

The Flash has been marred by the legal issues of the lead star, Ezra Miller. The 30-year-old has been accused of physical abuse, disorderly conduct, harassment, burglary, and more, between the years of 2020 and 2022.

In April 2022, Miller claimed they were seeking treatment for “complex mental health issues.” In a statement to People, Miller addressed all the controversies surrounding them.

"Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment," Miller said. "I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”

In May 2023, The Flash director Andy Muschietti revealed he had no plans of replacing Miller as the titular character. According to Muschietti, no one else could do what Miller did with the role.

"I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did," Muschietti said. "The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it."
