Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and cult-favorite What We Do in the Shadows, has just unveiled the first trailer for his "anti-hate satire" Jojo Rabbit. Set during World War II, the film follows the story of a young German boy known as Jojo "Rabbit" Betzler, as he confronts his desire to serve under Adolf Hitler. He's joined by his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, played by none other that Waititi himself.
Written and directed by Waititi, Jojo Rabbit also stars Roman Griffin Davis as the titual Jojo, Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, and Alfie Allen. The 10-year-old lead's mother is played by Johansson, who is secretly hiding a young Jewish girl in Nazi germany, while Rockwell, Merchant, and Allen all portray Nazi officers and Gestapo agents. Jojo Rabbit hits theaters on Oct. 18 and premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
The trailer arrives shortly after it was confirmed that Waititi will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Love and Thunder in 2021. While he previously directed Ragnarok, he's also serving as the writer for the new Thor entry. Waititi's involvement with the film also resulted in the postponement of the long-gestating live-action Akira remake, which was originally set to arrive May 2021.
