On November 20, 1988, Nickelodeon cemented the legacy of one of its first Nicktoons, Rugrats, by releasing The Rugrats Movie. It doubled as the first film based on a Nicktoon, as well as being the first animated film from Nickelodeon Movies.
The film got the stamp of approval from its audience, to the tune of $141 million gross worldwide. That made The Rugrats Movie the first non-Disney animated feature to surpass the $100 million mark stateside. And while The Simpsons Movie became the highest grossing animated film based on a TV series back in 2007, that was a record that The Rugrats Movie held before Bart hit theaters.
Sales and figures aside, The Rugrats Movie is remembered for more than just giving fans of the show a larger-than-life look at Tommy and the gang. It gifted us an official soundtrack featuring classic moments like Blackstreet and Mya's "Take Me There," which not only featured Mase and Blinky Blink, but found a way to turn the iconic Rugrats theme into a bop (thanks, Teddy Riley).
The soundtrack also featured intriguing pairings like No Doubt and Elvis Costello, as well as Rakim and Danny Saber, as well as Lisa Loeb, Busta Rhymes, and Devo, among others. If you were a fan of the film or its soundtrack, Urban Legends is releasing The Rugrats Movie soundtrack on vinyl for the first time EVER.
Available for pre-order today, the soundtrack will be available on some bright-orange vinyl, true to the color scheme of the series. That'll look dope on your turntable, or will be dope for your Rugrats-loving friends or family. This limited edition release hits on November 30.
