After Beyoncé's explosive Coachella performance at weekend one of the festival, the generous queen announced she would donate $25,000 grants to four HBCU's through her BeyGOOD charity. Beyoncé's Homecoming Scholars Program will award one lucky student from each college with the grant for the 2018-2019 school year, and now, thanks to Google, four more lucky students will get the chance to be considered for the grant.
Google.org, the charitable arm of the tech behemoth, has announced it will match the superstar philanthropist's donation and will add four of its own $25,000 grants. Students at Texas Southern University, Fisk University, Grambling State University, and Morehouse College will now be able to apply for the Homecoming Scholars grant. Students studying literature, creative arts, African-American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science and engineering will be eligible to apply, and must have at least a 3.5 GPA.
“Google understands the vital role historically black colleges and universities play in delivering a high quality and culturally responsive education,” said Maab Ibrahim, a program manager at Google.org, in a statement.
Beyoncé's theatric performance at Coachella was the impetus behind her latest donation through her scholarship program. During the two-hour set, she payed homage to the excitement, pride and rich history of HBCU's by incorporating the essence of the homecoming weekend experience. Now Beyoncé is challenging other businesses and companies like Google to step up and contribute to the Homecoming Scholars Program as well.
