It’s no secret that Lil Uzi Vert is one of music’s most polarizing figures. Between their nonbinary identity, unique personal style, and genre-fusing approach to hip-hop, the artist has established themselves as a full-fledged nonconformist. While many have applauded Uzi for being unapologetically true to themselves, others have criticized their uncompromised self-expression.

Uzi addressed this in “Suicide Doors,” a much-talked-about track from their newly released studio album, Pink Tape. The cut begins with a clip from a Say Cheese video featuring Charleston White, a comedian/social media personality who took aim at Uzi in a homophobic rant.

“My right hand to God, I ain’t never heard an Uzi Vert song that I can say, ‘That’s Uzi Vert,’” White said. “But I know he’s a sissified-looking n***a that put fingernail polish on his motherf*ckin’ nails and wear dresses. How you gon’ talk about something, n***a?”

“Suicide Doors” finds Uzi defending their individuality and dismissing anyone who has a problem with it: “I don’t give a fuck about none of y’all n****s,” they declared in the song. “Y’all n****s tried to ban me from this shit, but I came back/ I do what I want, I do anything I please.”

Uzi also addressed speculation of their sexuality on another track on Pink Tape, "Flooded the Face": "How could you ever say Lil Uzi gay? / Fuck four of 'em raw, fuck four of 'em safe."

The track was previewed during Uzi’s performance at Summer Smash 2023. White confirmed he had authorized the sample in a social media video posted earlier this week.

“I’m in the industry now, n***a,” he said. “Before Uzi Vert released this song… Atlantic Records and Uzi Vert and them people called me and Say Cheese TV on Friday night. They called me so they can get the release and I can sign the authorization and they can pay me for being on Uzi Vert’s new album.

“I said, ‘Whaaat? Me?’” he continued. “I told T.I. I’m gonna blow past him… and because of you guys, because you guys cannot stop typing and watching me and can’t take your eyes off of me, y’all made everybody watch me too.”
