Britney Spears’ father has filed a petition to end the singer’s 13-year conservatorship.
NBC News reports James “Jamie” Spears’ filed the documents at Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, stating that his daughter “is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.” The filing went on to say that due to Britney’s current situation “grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist.”
Britney’s father has been in control over her conservatorship since it was imposed back in 2008.
The decision arrives just a week after Britney’s lawyer accused the singer’s father of attempting to get roughly $2 million in payments prior to stepping down from his position as the head of her estate. Attorney Mathew Rosengart, in a filing last Monday, argued that James’ “true motivation” is to “extort” millions.
“Regardless of the past, Mr. Spears and his counsel are now on notice: the status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted,” the filing read. “Mr. Spears’ blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments, on top of the millions already repaid from Ms. Spears’ estate by Mr. Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”
Back in June, Britney formally asked the court to terminate her 13-year conservatorship.
“I am traumatized… I’m not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, I’m insane,” Spears told Judge Brenda Penny. “It’s my wish and my dream for this to end.”
The pop star made several disturbing claims during her testimony. The singer called the conservatorship “abusive” and said she was barred from making medical decisions or control her own finances. The singer also claimed that she was not allowed to remove an IUD despite wanting to have another child.
Spears’ conservatorship was implemented following her highly-publicized mental breakdown in 2008. Jamie and Andrew Wallet were subsequently appointed as co-conservators with Wallet resigning in 2019. Bessemer Trust Co. was later added as co-conservator.
