Spotify has released its Year in Music lists for 2017, and Ed Sheeran takes the spot for most globally streamed artist on the platform. Sheeran’s ÷ (pronounced "divide") was also the most streamed album on Spotify for the year with 3.1 billion streams, while his single "Shape of You" was the most streamed song in Spotify history with 1.4 billion plays. Sheeran accumulated a massive 6.3 billion streams overall this year.

"Ed Sheeran absolutely dominated this year with the release of his record-breaking album, Divide," said Spotify’s Chief Content Officer Stefan Blom. "There is no doubt that 2017 was The Year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to, and shared his music on Spotify. Congratulations to Ed on an amazing achievement."

Drake came in the second spot for most streamed artists of the year. The rapper was previously the most streamed artist of both 2016 and 2015. The Weeknd andKendrick Lamar rounded out the list of top five most streamed artists of 2017.

Both Lil Pump and Trippie Redd made the list for "Breakout Artists." To that end, it was also a big year for hip-hop in general. Streams of the genre "increased 74 percent over the past year according to Spotify data - a significant increase, particularly considering Hip Hop’s popularity in 2016." Latin music increased by a considerable 110 percent thanks to help from hit tracks "Despacito" and "Mi Gente."
