Footage has been released showing what police describe as a car chase involving a 10-year-old driver in a stolen SUV.

In an initial public statement on the May 27 incident, the Michigan State Police’s Third District said they had “recovered a stolen 2017 Buick Encore” and apprehended a 10-year-old suspect.

According to police, they fist received a call from OnStar of a stolen vehicle being tracked on the interstate. Initial efforts to pull over the SUV proved unsuccessful, resulting in OnStar ultimately disabling the vehicle remotely.

Meanwhile, multiple 911 calls came in about “a child” being spotted driving a car on the interstate. After the Buick came to a stop, the 10-year-old suspect is said to have attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

When reached for comment on Tuesday, a public information officer with Michigan State Police told Complex they had “nothing further to add.”

Per a report from regional outlet MLive citing another police rep, the 10-year-old was “staying with relatives” when they allegedly made off with the SUV in an effort to drive to Detroit to see their mother. The car itself, in fact, is stated in that report to have belonged to the child’s mother.
