Donald Trump is reportedly really pissed about the government shutdown. No, not because it will likely disrupt the lives of millions of Americans, but because it ruined his weekend party plans.
According to the Daily Beast, sources claim the president began expressing his frustration about the shutdown’s potential effect on his trip to Mar-a-Lago, where he intended to celebrate his inauguration anniversary at a fancy-shmancy gala Saturday night.
Per the Daily Beast:
Two sources close to the president, one a White House official and the other a longtime confidant, told The Daily Beast how excited he was for the event and relayed his growing concern that the potential failure to strike a deal to keep the federal government open could keep him from “my party,” as the president has said.
Democratic Coalition co-founder Scott Dworkin claimed he received similar reports from “people close to the White House.”
The White House confirmed Saturday that Trump’s long-planned trip to Mar-a-Lago was canceled in light of the government shutdown; however, administration officials who spoke to the Daily Beast claimed the shutdown “would not necessarily impede the president’s travel plans to Mar-a-Lago or elsewhere.” One official told CNN the White House decided to scrap the trip because they feared it would be a bad look for POTUS.
The news outlet reports the gala, which will raise money for the re-election campaign and the RNC, will go on without the president Saturday night. Tickets for the event are going for $100,000. Trump’ son, Eric, will reportedly replace his father as the guest of honor.
