Most of us will never achieve the same level of brilliance as Albert Einstein. But thanks to Levi’s Vintage, we now have the opportunity to at least dress like him.
Earlier this week, the storied denim brand reissued its leather Menlo Cossack Jacket worn by Einstein during his first years in the United States. Though it’s definitely not as iconic as his electric, wiry hair, the piece is a solid reflection of the famed physicist’s personal style. It was minimal, timeless, and, above all, practical.
Made of 100 percent sheep leather, the reissued design features distinct details like rounded collar and cuffs, angled welt pockets, cinch straps, and brass buckles. It’s a pretty conceiving replica of Einstein’s original jacket, which was purchased by Levi’s in a 2016 Christie’s auction in London. According to Christie’s specialist Thomas Venning, the garment had not only developed rich patina, it also carried an unmistakable aroma.
“Einstein was an incessant pipe-smoker and, astonishingly, 60 years after his death, his jacket still smells of smoke,” Venning said.
Because of this detail, Levi’s also joined forces with Brooklyn-based perfume house D.S. & Durga to produce a fragrance that mimics the smell of Einstein’s jacket. The scent is described as “a warm blend of burley pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscripts, and vintage leather.” Those who purchase the reissued jacket will receive a bottle of the perfume along with a replica of the auction paddle used to acquire the garment.
