Mary Lou Retton won the hearts of Americans with her classic Olympic gold medal performance. It even landed her on a Wheaties box.
Who can forget her wide smile, can-do attitude, and powerful routine? She scored perfect 10s in some routines at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles despite a knee injury before winning the Olympic all-around competition.
So no one wants to see Retton this way.
Entertainment Tonight obtained a body cam video from police that shows Retton's OWI arrest last May.
The video, which ET shared on YouTube, has had several hundred thousand views since it was released on July 9, and it's concerning fans of Retton.
In the video, a Fairmount, West Virginia, police officer asks Retton to perform field sobriety tests, telling her at one point, "Don't hop around."
At another point, he told Retton, who referred to herself as a "gold medalist," that she would probably "be pretty good at this," meaning walking in a straight line. She joked that she was used to doing that upside down, a reference to her gymnastics routines.
In the video, Retton seemed dazed and upset, although she referred to the officer's blue eyes. "Are you kidding me?" she said at another point.
She stumbled right out of the gate while trying to walk a straight line during the incident, which occurred in May in West Virginia, where she lives. She had reportedly gone to get her nails done.
Retton pleaded no contest to the non-aggravated OWI charge and was fined. The mugshot was released along with the body cam video.
Retton previously told ET, "I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support."
Fans have been concerned about Retton for some time.
"Such a sad fall from grace. After an entire life of training, the 'after' of Olympic championship is a hard road for many," wrote one person on X after the body cam footage was released.
In 2023, Retton’s family revealed that she spent time in intensive care because she was suffering from a "rare form of pneumonia," according to the Associated Press.
She is wearing an oxygen tube in the body cam video.
According to Page Six, she was accused of driving with a bottle of wine at her side.
"If I could avoid this, I would," the officer told her in the body cam video.
