Sony and Marvel have revealed a new trailer for Morbius starring Jared Leto, Michael Keaton, Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, and more.

Leto was announced as the vampire antihero back in 2020. The fresh look explores the origin story behind Morbius and delves into his dangerous superpowers. The character was introduced back in the early ’70s within the Spider-Man universe, and the trailer suggests the film will align closely with the comics.

While the new glimpse showcases the inner conflict Morbius will face as he weighs whether he exists to “heal the world or to destroy it,” perhaps the most exciting moment comes in the trailer’s closing scene, when he breaks a man’s hand who attempted to stab him. “Who the hell are you, man?” the person asks.

“I am Venom,” Morbius replies. “I’m just kidding, it’s Dr. Michael Morbius at your service.”

The joke further hints at what Marvel fans have speculated since that shocking mid-credit scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is that Venom may very well be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This logistically could shake out the way fans hope since Sony shares joint custody of Spider-Man with Marvel Studios. The original Morbius trailer already referenced Tom Holland’s Spider-Man via the “MURDERER” graffiti scrawled over a Spidey image on a wall, which of course references the post-credit scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Should Morbius follow Venom’s likely footsteps into the MCU, he won’t be its only vampire antihero, as it was recently confirmed Bassam Tariq will revamp the Blade series with Mahershala Ali in the starring role.

“A Black man created the superhero world that we’re in, that’s just the truth,” Tariq said in an interview with IndieWire. “For me to now be working with somebody as talented and a juggernaut as Mahershala Ali, and the writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour, I’m just so—I’m so honored to be working with real Black juggernauts and Black talent. For me to just be with them in this room and listen and learn as I build this out, it’s really an honor.”

Morbius is due Jan. 28, 2022. It’s directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life, Safe House) and written by Matt Sazam and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter). Check out the trailer above.
