Hindsight is 20/20. Suicide Squad was considered a flop after netting $745 million worldwide on a $175 million production budget, according to Box Office Mojo. So, what would director David Ayer have done differently? Back in January, Ayer provided a lengthy response to a fan on Twitter who called the film a "masterpiece," expressing his appreciation towards the sentiment but admitting that the movie had its flaws.
"Would I do a lot of things different? Yep, for sure," Ayer wrote. "Wish I had a time machine. I'd make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story." Nearly one year later and Ayer appears to still be bothered by this oversight on his part. On Sunday, Ayer told a fan on Twitter that the decision to not make the Joker the main villain is something he agonizes over till this day.
Even though Joker spent around 15 minutes on the screen, Ayer shouldn't agonize over this issue when there are plenty of other problems surrounding the film. Cinema Sins' "Everything Wrong...In Less Than 20 Minutes" broke down 157 things wrong with Suicide Squad. While Cinema Sins nitpicks at issues within the movie, it also speaks to larger problems, pointing out that the film is far from perfect. Making Joker the primary villain probably wasn't going to make all that big of a difference.
