HBO announced its decision to renew Westworld for a third season. After a year-and-a-half long wait, season 2 debuted on April 22 and brought viewers back to the Western theme park populated by androids.

“It’s been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said. “From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us.”

In the show’s second season, Westworld took a turn as the androids that populate the park revolt against their human creators. The series was created by Nolan and Joy and stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Jimmi Simpson, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, and Tessa Thompson.

Though westworld has been renewed, given the gap between the first and second season it’s unclear how soon it will return. The first season averaged an estimated 13.2 million viewers, making it competitive with HBO’s most popular show Game of Thrones. It also managed to snag five Emmys.

HBO is putting a lot of eggs into the Westworld basket, and it may be the heir apparent to Game of Thrones' well, throne. HBO is currently developing some Thrones offshoots, but those are not expected to air anytime soon, especially not before the 2019 GoT series finale.

The rest of the network’s drama slate currently includes The Deuce, Succession, Big Little Lies, and True Detective
