Mahershala Ali has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming science-fiction film Sovereign, Varietyreports. While details regarding the project remain a mystery, its producer Entertainment One is excited to have Ali at the helm.

"We have long loved this project and have been patiently waiting until we found the right leading actor, which we no doubt have found in the incredibly talented Mahershala Ali," eOne’s president of film Nick Meyer said in a statement. "The cast is clearly shaping up well and is backed by a creative team with a proven track record and the ability to tell a story that will resonate with audiences around the world."

Sovereign will be directed by Marc Munden, who garnered critical acclaim for his work on the British series Utopia which won an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in 2014. The screenplay has been penned by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo that worked with John Krasinski on the 2018 horror film A Quiet Place

Ali, who has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in two of last three years, continues to expand his resume. Aside from his Oscar-winning portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley in Green Book, the 45-year-old actor lent his voice for the role of Miles Morales' uncle Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Mahershala can also be seen in theaters in the sci-fi action film Alita: Battle Angel, and on the small screen in the third season of True Detective on HBO.
