Nas and Kelis Reach Joint Custody Settlement of 8-Year Old Son

Nas and Kelis have been battling for custody of their 8-year-old son, Knight, for quite some time now and have finally reached an agreement. Since the two artists divorced in 2010, every other week we reported on one of them called the other “hostile” or wanting more money in child support. According to TMZ, it appears that the couple has finally decided to share joint legal and physical custody of their son, with a few specifics fleshing out the details.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ at the end of last year, Nas claimed Kelis wasn’t cooperating amicably, and that he’d attempted to reach an agreement for months. Now, both parents will share equal rights with caveats that include Nas getting Knight on Father’s Day and Kelis getting him on Mother’s Day. Additionally, Knight’s birthdays will decide which parent gets to celebrate with him—Nas on the even years and Kelis on the odd ones.

Divorce is rarely, if ever, an easy process. Benevolent discussions can quickly turn into a heated battleground, which is only emboldened if the parents are famous entertainers like Nas and Kelis. Considering the pair officially divorced in 2010 and Kelis welcomed another baby in 2015 with reported husband real estate agent Mike Mora, it's about time that they've buried the hatchet. On the career front, Nas has been busy being an angel investor through his Queensbridge Venture Partners company, while Kelis recently co-hosted BBC One’s Pitch Battle, where she judged singing contestants alongside Gareth Malone. It would appear that the two are doing reasonably well, even though Kelis believes the monthly $8,000 she receives from Nas is far too low, in light of his recent business ventures. In any case, it’s great to see that the most important element, here—the emotional stability of their son—has been taken care of.
