Rae Sremmurd’s Slim Jxmmi was arrested at LAX on Sunday after border agents found an outstanding warrant out for his arrest, TMZ reports.
Slim Jxmmi was touching down in Los Angeles from Canada when the warrant was pulled up, and it reportedly detailed an outstanding drug case. When asked for comment however, Jxmmi’s lawyer told Pitchfork the detainment of his client was due to “miscommunication,” and that the warrant in question had actually been dismissed.
The two-year-old warrant read that Slim Jxmmi had been arrested in Cobb County, Georgia, where he entered a plea for a minor marijuana possession charge and received five years probation. In January of this year, the Rae Sremmurd rapper was arrested for misdemeanor battery after his girlfriend reported him for domestic violence, though she recanted her testimony the following month.
“Nearly two years ago, Aaquil entered a plea to a marijuana offense in Cobb County, Georgia,” Jxmmi’s lawyer Steve Sadow told TMZ “He was placed on probation. In early June 2022, the mother of his child filed a untruthful complaint with the Cobb County Police Department, which led to an arrest warrant being issued.”
He continued. “Aaquil was not arrested on that warrant. Instead, a Cobb County Magistrate Judge held a hearing on July 20, 2022 and dismissed the warrant. Unfortunately, the Cobb County Probation Office was not made aware that the arrest warrant was dismissed and thus failed to withdraw its probation violation warrant. When Aaquil came back from Canada into LA airport, he was arrested on the probation violation warrant. We expect that warrant to be withdrawn in the next day or so, and then Aaquil will be released.”
Slim Jxmmi’s arrest comes as he and Swae Lee gear up to release their first Rae Sremmurd album in four years. In an interview with GQ, the duo opened up about their forthcoming Sremm4Life project, which Slim Jxmmi confirmed will feature a song that addresses the 2020 murder of the duo’s stepfather.
“It was crazy because I’ve never really talked about that,” Jxmmi said. “That was another thing that made me like sit down and just change up real quick.”
He continued, “But things happen for a reason, and I feel like you never know what’s going to happen—you’ve got to cherish people while they’re here.”
