With their first new album in four years, Rae Sremmurd is further expanding their sound while also tackling deeply personal topics.
In a new interview withGQ, the duo opened up about what they’ve individually been up to in the pandemic-dominated time since the release of their 2018 triple album SR3MM, including talks of how a pandemic-spurred pause was beneficial to them both. Fans also get more of an idea of what to expect from their next effort, the impending release of which was signaled with the arrival of the new song and video “Denial” in June.
Confirmed via Briana Younger’s piece is that one song on Sremm4Life sees Slim Jxmmi addressing the murder of the duo’s stepfather.
“It was crazy because I’ve never really talked about that,” Jxmmi said in the interview. “That was another thing that made me like sit down and just change up real quick.”
Later, Jxmmi reflected on hearing the news, saying he “wasn’t ready” for what happened.
“But things happen for a reason, and I feel like you never know what’s going to happen—you’ve got to cherish people while they’re here,” the 30-year-old added.
As previously reported, Swae Lee shared (and later removed) footage last April of a phone call with Michael Sullivan, his and Jimmy’s half-brother who was indicted earlier that year on a murder charge in connection with the killing of Floyd Sullivan Jr. According to Swae and Slim’s mom, Bernadette Walker, Michael has schizoaffective disorder.
The death was also discussed in Swae Lee’s Snapchat original Swae Meets World, including in the inaugural episode of the 2021 series.
Elsewhere in the new GQ interview, it’s revealed that both Flo Milli and James Blake will be appearing on Sremm4Life, which doesn’t yet have an official release date but is expected later this year. Read the full piece here.
