Years after her untimely death, Aaliyah’s legacy continues to live on.
On Saturday, countless friends and fans took to social media to honor the late R&B princess, who tragically lost her life 17 years ago. One of the tributes came from Aaliyah’s good friend and collaborator Missy Elliott, who penned a short, but heartfelt message to the singer via Twitter.
“Aaliyah, we miss you so much,” Missy can be seen writing in a video. “But your legacy will live on forever and ever.”
The camera then pans to a collection of clothing items that feature Aaliyah's name and face.
“Aaliyah (Babygirl) I can only imagine how great you would be today winning oscars & creating sick music & still setting fashion trends!” Missy wrote in the video’s caption. “Your mom & brother @RAD_6 & your fans been holding it down 4 u […] you will always be A One in A Million. Sleep peacefully angel Babygirl.”
Aaliyah died in a plane crash on Aug. 25, 2001, along with eight other passengers. The singer, who was 22 at the time, was headed to Florida from the Bahamas, where she had just finished shooting the music video for “Rock the Boat.”
