The video was teased last week, when a 29-second trailer appeared on X's official YouTube page. The clip began with a voice memo dated April 12, 2018—about two months before X was fatally shot in Deerfield Beach, Florida. In the audio, X can be heard describing his vision for the "Hearteater" video and his desire to include his ex-girlfriend "in a weird way."
"I feel like tying her into it makes the video amazing, and it almost, like, really captures everyone's minds and gives me the power that I truly deserve," he said.
Director by James "JMP" Pereira fulfilled that vision.
"Anything that we worked on had to have purpose," Pereira said of the video. "The goal was to spark a conversation or make the viewer feel emotion while watching. The 'HEARTEATER' concept was an idea that Jahseh had wanted to do since we first spoke about the idea for 'SAD!' Bringing his vision to fruition has always been my priority and will continue to be."
The "Hearteater" video includes an appearance by Geneva Ayala, the rapper's ex-girlfriend who had accused him of abuse. X was awaiting trial for allegedly assaulting Ayala at the time of his murder; however, the domestic violence case was ultimately dropped in August 2018 due to X's death.
A day after the rapper was shot, Ayala took to Twitter saying the tragedy had left her "broken."
You can watch the "Hearteater" video above. The song is expected to appear on X's second posthumous album, Bad Vibes Forever.
