“I've always been very free in terms of thinking about my sexuality, so I've just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well."

Sam Smith has openly shared that he identifies as non-binary genderqueer.

In a new interview with actress Jameela Jamil for her Instagram-sponsored series, I Weigh, Smith spoke candidly on the topic of sexual identity, and that he neither identifies as a male or female, but “somewhere in between.”

“When I saw the word non-binary/genderqueer and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like, ‘fuck, that is me,’” he said. “Non-binary/genderqueer is that you do not identify in a gender. You are a mixture of all different things. You are your own special creation. That's how I take it—I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between—it's all on the spectrum.”

“I've always been very free in terms of thinking about my sexuality, so I've just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well,” he continued, adding that he does "think like a woman sometimes.”

He also talked about going through liposuction at 12 after developing "breasts" because of excess estrogen, and that he contemplated getting a sex change before ultimately deciding against it.

Jamil’s new campaign encourages people to place more value on their character and accomplishments than their weight. Watch her interview with Sam Smith below.
