When discussing the current, best games on the Nintendo Switch, it's important remember the following: Nintendo's appeal has always been its use of nostalgia and its uncanny ability to sell our childhoods back to us in playable form.
It makes sense, then, that many of the best Nintendo Switch games are “deluxe” and “definitive editions” of Wii U hits. This approach has triggered a rediscovery of the prior generation, so that the games of the less popular Wii U (which sold less than 14 million copies during its entire run, compared to the Switch’s 20 million and counting), are not forgotten. Rarely has there been this level of crossover, where one console is actively rehabilitating the reputation of the prior one.
The Switch functions in two different modes. Place it in the dock, and it's a console. Remove it, and it's a handheld, perfect for on the go. The best (and worst) thing one can say about the Switch is that it represents a point of no return. How can Nintendo ever make a standalone console after this? The hybrid console is so intuitive and so convenient, it’s hard to imagine going back to the old way of doing things.
