The Aviation Safety Network (ASN), as well as To70, have released data showing that 2017 was the safest year in commercial airline history. The ASN came to this conclusion by rounding up the number of fatal airliner accidents, as well as fatalities last year.
The ASN recorded 10 fatal airline accidents, which resulted in the death of 44 passengers and 35 people who were on the ground. In 2016, there were 16 accidents with 303 deaths. The decline in the number of accidents points to what ASN president Harro Ranter sees as a unified effort geared towards safety. "Since 1997 the average number of airliner accidents has shown a steady and persistent decline, for a great deal thanks to the continuing safety-driven efforts by international aviation organisations such as ICAO, IATA, Flight Safety Foundation and the aviation industry," Ranter said.
As of December 31, the passenger jet airliner held a record of 398 days without an accident. Meanwhile, there is one fatal passenger flight accident per 7,360,000 flights when you factor in the worldwide air traffic of about 36,800,000 flights.
The irony in all of this positive news is that you can throw all of these facts at someone who is afraid of flying, and they will quickly counter by stating that their flight will most likely be that one in every 7,360,000 flights.
