WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Faces Swedish Prosecutor Over Rape Allegations

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is finally facing prosecutors over the rape allegations leveraged against him more than six years ago in Stockholm, Sweden. According to the Guardian, Swedish prosecutors came to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange has been living in asylum from Ecuador since 2012.

Assange sought asylum in 2012 following the 2010 rape charges in fear that he would be extradited to Sweden for a trial and then extradited to the United States, where he would face charges for leaking diplomatic documents using WikiLeaks. Assange has denied the rape accusations against him.

The Swedish prosecutor, Ingrid Isgren, arrived in London on Monday morning to begin an interview with Assange that is expected to take three days, according to the Guardian. Isgren's office said that in addition to asking questions that were determined by Swedish prosecutors earlier in 2016, it also hopes to collect a DNA sample from Assange if he consents.

After Assange is questioned, the Ecuadorian embassy will provide a transcript of the interview to Sweden, who will then decide whether or not to further pursue action against Australian-born Assange, according to CNN.
