UPDATED 7/13, 1Β p.m.:Β LeBron has expanded on his thoughts on Twitter, noting he wasnβt βknockingβ the United States.
βMy comments on βThe Shopβ regarding Brittney Griner wasnβt knocking our beautiful country,β the Lakers superstar opened.
βI was simply saying how sheβs probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc inside that cage sheβs been in for over 100+ days!β James continued.Β βLong story short #BringHerHome. #FreeBGπ§‘.β
See original story below.
LeBron JamesΒ discussedΒ his thoughts on the Brittney Griner situationΒ in the trailer for anΒ upcoming episode of The Shop.Β
James said he would reconsiderΒ returning to the United States in light ofΒ the countryβs efforts to bringing Griner back home. βNow, how can she feel like America has her back?,β he asks in the clip above. βI would be feeling like, βDo I even want to go back to America?β
This isnβt the first time James has addressed Grinerβs situation. In June, he tweeted that we need toΒ βcome together and help do whatever we possibly canβ to bringΒ Griner back to the United States.Β Β Β
Vanessa Nygaard, head coach of Grinerβs WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury, suggestedΒ last week that if James were the one in Russia, he wouldΒ be back on U.S. soil by now.Β βIf it was LeBron, heβd be home, right?,β she asked. βItβs a statement about the value of women. Itβs a statement about the value of a Black person. Itβs a statement about the value of a gay person. All of those things. We know it, and so thatβs what hurts a little more.βΒ
The White House received a handwritten letter from Griner on July 4,Β in which she asked that PresidentΒ Biden not βforget about me and the other American Detainees,β adding, βPlease do all you can to bring us home.βΒ White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden read the letter and has made her return a priority.Β
Griner pleaded guilty to anΒ illegal crossing of a customs border with illegal narcotics charge. Her next scheduled court appearance will takeΒ place on Thursday. She is facing up to 10 years in prison.Β The New York TimesreportsΒ thatΒ Grinerβs guilty plea could pave the way for a potential exchange between the U.S. and Russia where the WNBA star will return home for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is alreadyΒ a decade into his 25-yearΒ prison sentence.Β
Boutβs actions served as the inspiration for the film Lord of War, starring Nicholas Cage.Β Β Β
The next episode of The Shop will premiereΒ on July 15 at 12 p.m. ET on the UNINTERRUPTED YouTube channel.Β Β
