The Sandra Bullock-starring Bird Box had the timeline in shambles when it dropped in 2018. The movie inspired so many conversations, tweets, and memes, that it made you feel like you almost had no choice but to watch so that you didn’t miss out on a cultural phenomenon. The post-apocalyptic horror film is based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name and it follows the survival tale of a woman and her two children five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide. The family must do what they can to reach safety while avoiding making eye contact with the hidden terror that has destroyed the world. Viewers have spent 282 million watching the film and it maintained its spot as Netflix’s biggest debut for nearly four years. Even if it has since been dethroned from the top spot, having a movie with a woman director and a woman as the lead for this long is already quite the feat.
