Ashtray Euphoria Character Ranking

HBO’s hit drama Euphoria wrapped its second season on Sunday with a finale full of roller coaster moments. As fans still reel from the conclusion of Season 2, Javon Walton, who plays Ashtray, revealed one of the episode’s most pivotal scenes was initially supposed to end differently.

[Euphoria spoilers follow]

In an interview with Variety, Walton explained that Fez (Angus Cloud) was the one to get shot and killed in the original version of the script, but the shocking plot point swung in Ash’s direction the day before they shot the scene.

“And Ashtray wasn’t supposed to get shot. That was another thing,” Walton said of changes to the scripts as the season went on. “He wasn’t supposed to get shot! It was Fez that was supposed to get shot at first, which is crazy. And then, like a day before, they changed the storyline to me getting shot.”

Walton also talked about how the moment when Ash accidentally shoots Fez wasn’t always in the script either and was written in the day before.

“I don’t think that was always there,” he added. “It was kind of written — the whole thing — like a day before.”

Ashtray getting shot in the finale was one of the biggest plot twists of the entire season, especially with many fans speculating on social media for weeks that Fez would be not making it to Season 3. However, Walton also said in the interview that there is still a possibility that Ash is still alive.

“There’s definitely hope for Ashtray to still be alive,” the young actor said. “Because if there’s somebody who could take a bullet in the show, it’s Ashtray. Ashtray is one badass kid. He’s not playing around. I believe he has a shot about being around for Season 3.”

Here’s a TV/film watching rule of thumb: if you don’t see the body drop on screen, then the character could always come back, so there might be hope for Ash to make an even more shocking return in Season 3. Besides that wild twist, several other questions still need to be answered in the next season of Euphoria, like if Fez is going to jail, how will Ash’s possible death affect him, and more.
