Game of Thrones fans have been given a closer look at the new House of the Dragon series, based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, ahead of its debut next month on HBO.

Up top, catch the newly released House of the Dragon trailer, which fans are likely already aware takes place 200 years prior to the events of the main Thrones story.

Paddy Considine stars as King Viserys Targaryen, who’s been selected to follow in the footsteps of the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen. While the character’s focus is on bearing the responsibility of continuing and furthering the legacy set in motion by his grandfather, he will soon learn there’s (much) more to being a leader than good intentions.

Also starring in the 10-episode series are Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, and more.

The House of the Dragon prequel series, co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal (who’s also serving as co-showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik), premieres on Aug. 21 via HBO and HBO Max.

The ever-expanding Thrones universe could soon count a Jon Snow-centered spinoff among its roster of HBO properties, with the Hollywood Reporterrevealing in June that exactly such a series involving Kit Harington is in early development.

Martin himself later addressed the resulting chatter, notably backing up comments about the project (which he says currently carries the working title Snow) from another original Thrones star, Emilia Clarke.

“Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us,” the A Song of Ice and Fire author wrote in a June 23-dated blog post. “I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet…but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”
